Virgin Galactic achieved a significant milestone as it propelled its inaugural privately funded space adventurers, along with its inaugural space sweepstakes victors, past the 50-mile space demarcation. The excursion, designated Galactic 02, marked a remarkable occasion for several participants, including Keisha Schahaff, the winner of an online contest hosted by the Omaze charity sweepstakes platform in collaboration with Space for Humanity. Accompanied by her daughter, Anastatia Mayers, they became the first mother-daughter duo to partake in space travel, a historic feat for the Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda.
Jon Goodwin, an 80-year-old British adventurer who participated in the 1972 Olympics, also etched his name in history on this flight. Having reserved a spot with Virgin Galactic in 2005, he defied odds after being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease almost a decade ago. His journey signified a monumental achievement, making him the second person with Parkinson's to venture into space.
Piloting the SpaceShipTwo rocket plane VSS Unity were C.J. Sturckow and Kelly Latimer, joined by chief astronaut instructor Beth Moses. The mission aligned with Virgin Galactic's established flight profile, incorporating insights from previous test flights and a research mission conducted in June for the Italian Air Force.
