Researchers developed chip-sized version of lasers, for generating short light pulses - Ayesha Shoukat - 11-14-2023     Researchers have developed a chip-sized version of ultrafast mode-locked lasers, which are known for generating extremely short pulses of light. Traditionally, these lasers are large and expensive, but the new chip-sized version can fit on a fingertip or a small nanophotonic chip. The team used thin-film lithium niobate, a crystalline material, to engineer a tiny laser with high output peak power. The technology could have applications in portable and handheld devices, allowing for diagnostics in healthcare and environmental analysis, as well as futuristic chip-scale atomic clocks for navigation when GPS is compromised or unavailable.
